Two decades ago, as I was researching my own family's history, I was surprised at how difficult it was to track down information on the various family history associations that could have been helpful to me. That frustration was echoed by other genealogists, so I started collecting all of the names and addresses of family, historical and genealogical societies as I came across them and never stopped. Thus, Iron Gate Publishing and the Directory of Genealogical and Historical Societies, Libraries, and Collections in the US and Canada was born.
Today, there are more than 22,000 societies listed in the Directory and more information coming in daily. It's been really exciting to see the interest in genealogy grow since our beginnings in 1990. We rely on the help of other researchers and genealogists out there to help us keep the information in the directories current and accurate. If you'd like to list your genealogical or historical society, archive, collection or museum, please contact us. Your information will appear in the next edition of the Directory. Thanks in advance for your help.
Since then, we have branched out into pulished source indices, mostly of original records from Colorado's territorial period. And now, we're proud to announce the release of a series of self-publishing guides, especially for genealogists and local historians.
